Privacy Policy

Workey is a dictation app for macOS. It was built to work on your Mac: what you say is turned into text on your Mac, and no server ever receives your voice or your dictation. Workey has no analytics. To use it you sign in with a free account, which holds only what's listed below.

Your account

• Your email address, to sign you in with a one-time code. If you sign in with Google, Google also shares your name and profile picture with us; we don't use them.
• How long you dictate: the length and time of each dictation, added up per month, to give you your free minutes. Never the words.
• Which Mac you use: its name (such as "Sam's MacBook Pro") and a one-way scrambled form of its hardware ID, so an account is used on one Mac at a time and free minutes can't be reset with a new account on the same Mac. The hardware ID itself never leaves your Mac.
• Your account is stored by our hosting provider, Supabase, on its servers. Sign-in codes are sent by our email provider.
• Deleting your account (Workey, Account, Delete account) removes your email and your minute history. Payment records are kept for as long as tax law requires, without your email. The scrambled Mac ID and that Mac's minute total for the month are kept, so free minutes can't be reset by deleting and signing up again. They identify a Mac, not you.

Your voice and your text

• Speech is turned into text on your Mac: by Apple's speech recognizer (Fast), or by the speech model you download for Balanced or Accurate.
• One exception: if you dictate in a language that Apple's recognizer can't handle on the device, macOS sends that audio to Apple to recognize it, under Apple's privacy policy. Workey uses on-device recognition whenever macOS offers it, and Balanced and Accurate never send audio anywhere.
• Cleanup and rewriting run on your Mac, with Workey's built-in rules or the writing model you download in Settings.
• Your history, dictionary, what Workey learns from your edits and your settings are stored only on your Mac, in your user Library. Deleting Workey's folder in Application Support removes them. We can't see, restore or delete them for you.
• To fit text into the field you're typing in, Workey reads the text around the cursor through macOS Accessibility. It reads that text on your Mac and doesn't keep it, except in your own history.

What does go over the network

• Model downloads. When you pick a speech or rewriting level that needs a download, Workey downloads it from Hugging Face. Hugging Face sees an ordinary download request (your IP address and the file).
• Account checks. Workey sends each dictation's length to your account and checks your remaining minutes, about every 15 minutes while it runs. Offline, it counts minutes on your Mac and sends them later.
• Update checks. Once a day Workey reads a small file at workey.org to see if a new version exists, and downloads updates from GitHub. These requests carry your IP address and Workey's version, nothing about you or your dictation.
• This website is hosted by Vercel, which keeps standard server logs (IP address, pages visited, time). The site uses no cookies, analytics or tracking scripts.

Permissions Workey asks for

• Microphone, only while you dictate. Workey doesn't listen in the background.
• Speech Recognition, to use Apple's recognizer.
• Accessibility, to see the shortcut key in other apps and to paste the text.
• System Audio Recording, only if you switch the source to what your Mac is playing.

Purchases

Payments for Workey Pro are processed by Razorpay, under Razorpay's privacy policy. You enter your UPI, card or bank details on Razorpay's page; Workey never sees them. We receive from Razorpay the payment and subscription IDs, the plan, the amount, the date, the status of your autopay, and your email, and keep them with your account to give you Pro, handle refunds and meet accounting and tax rules. If you use a free-access code, we keep which code you used, when, and the scrambled ID of the Mac.

Children

Workey isn't directed at children under 13 and collects no personal information from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will appear here with a new date.
